World's Fair Chicago Columbian Exposition Souvenir
Woven souvenir flag from the World's Columbian Exposition of the 1893 World's Fair in Chicago. The flag is made from red and violet fabric depicting the U.S. Government Building.
The flag is in very good condition for its age, although there is some fraying around the edges; especially at the top left corner and a spot on the right side. The colors of the fabric are still very vivid.
It measures:
• 10 by 10 inches
• Weighs 5.3 grams
The U.S. Government Building was located off of Lake Michigan between the fisheries and the Manufacturers and Liberal Arts Buildings. Many official U.S. documents were on display in the building; except the Constitution, which was considered too important to leave Washington.
Random facts about the 1893 World's Fair:
• 400th anniversary of Columbus "discovering" the Americas
• There was map of the United States made entirely out of pickles
• The children's building was two stories tall and had a playground on the roof (that could be dangerous if somebody swung too high on the swingset)
• World's most beautiful 1,500lb woman was a chocolate Venus de Milo in the Hall of Agriculture
